• Details of bus-only lanes in Westminster. Croydon and Islington were announced recently by the Greater London Council. Eleven routes will benefit from more than half a mile of lanes in the Baker Street area. The lanes will cost £8300 to set up and are expected to save £30,000 a year in operating costs and time saved. Cyclists, but not taxis, will be allowed to use the lanes as well.
A 770ft-long lane in Islington is expected to cut up to 3+ minutes from journey times of 390 buses at present slowed to 2 mph during the morning peak-hour traffic crawl. Savings of £35,000 each year are expected in return for an initial cost of £4770. An 820ft lane, costing £3815 to install and expected to save £7700 annually, is to be opened in Croydon High Street.
