• Less than a fortnight after launching two new reefer trailers (CM 21-27 April) York has revealed its latest, improvedstability, tandem-axle insulated semi-trailer for hot-coated roadstone, which offers over 20% more payload than a rigid tipper.
York's Black Top tipping trailer is designed to discharge hot-coated roadstone directly into Barber-Greene and Blaw Knox pavers. It has an unladen weight of 5.1 tonnes, allowing it to carry up to 25.25 tonnes of coated stone when coupled to a light, three-axle tractive unit, running at 38 tonnes GCW. According to York this compares favourably with a York's Black Top tipping semitrailer has been fitted with wide single tyres, allowing greater spring centres within its Tadchurch rubber suspension, to give extra hPping stability. typical eight-legger payload of just 19.8 tonnes.
The Black Top design has been derived from York's Magnum 27 bulker and Quarryman tipper models, but, compared with the Quarryman, it has a shorter (8.13m) body, making it more manoeuvrable. Coupled to a 6x4 Foden tractor outer axle spacing is 6.35m.
To improve stability, York has fitted the Black Top trailer with 16.5-22.5 wide single tyres on offset wheels in place of conventional twins. This has allowed wider spring centres at 1,400nun — 175nun more than on the Quarryman. York claims that this has increased roll stiffness by 31%.
The Black Top's welded aluminium bath-tub style 19.5m3 capacity body has been built by York subsidiary Neville Charrold. It has a 75mrn thick insulating core, uninterrupted by corner or side posts, which ensures easy flowing discharge up to 10 hours after loading. A low tipping hinge line, 355trun below frame top level, and a contoured tail chute, allow for quick discharge.
One of the first prototypes is already in service with the Tilcon Group on road surfacing contracts.
