Bottomley said there had been a significant increase in the number of new bus operators and services. Also registered backup for socially necessary routes has been reduced, in some cases without detrimental effect to those routes.
Bottomley emphasised the need for investment in wheel-chair lifts and hoists to cater for the disabled. "Many do not realise that one in ten of the population has a disability," he said, and added that this was a very good potential new market.
