QTEPS against the atruse of taxicab licences through the use of taxi petrol for other purposes are being taken at York. Since the beginning of the war the number of cabs in the city has increased 100 per cent.
The authorities have now banned the issue of further taxi licences in York, and the police have been instructed to keep a careful watch on the ranks and ti ; see that those holding cab licences are fulfilling their obligations.
In a statement on the position, Alderman T. Morris, chairman of York Watch Committee, said his committee was fully convinced that many persons holding licences were not genuinely engaged in the taxi-cab.business, whilst others had, increased the number of their licences and, by not operating all the cars in accordance with those licences, had created petrol reserves for private use.
At York City Police Court, last meek, two cab owners who had been seen using their taxis to drive to their places of employment, were each fined 210 for using petrol for a purpose other than that to which the coupons concerned related, 10s. for using a taxi for a purpose for which a higher rate of vehicle duty was payable, and 10s. for using as a private car a vehicle insured as a hackney carriage.
