Look at the situations vacant columns in any paper and they are littered with ads for HGV drivers. Having been made redundant and looking for a change in direction I have tried to access the training required for HGV driving via North East Lincs Council, only to be told after interview that I'm out of their catchment area, I almost made it via A4E in Louth, having passed my medical and achieved a 100% theory pass. Alas, I was placed in a cancellation slot with an HGV driving school with no prior assessment of my truck driving potential. Unfortunately this training was inadequate to gain the pass standard.
Sadly 44E has no more funds available as it is not a charity to buy in further training, although it did fund an assessment after the event with a driving school and this indicated that I needed betweei five and seven days' tuition to bring me up to scratch.
So an appeal to all those firms that are having difficulty recruiting drivers: how about investing in the future and sponsoring my HGV training? You could find yourself a reliable employee.
