SOUTHPORT'S BUSES HAVE ANOTHER GOOD -YEAR.

SOUTHPORT Corporation, which

runs 25 buses-1.7 Vuleans and eight Leylonds—made a gross profit of £11,806 from their operation during the year ended March 31, 1933, as contrasted with a gross profit of £12,037 a -veer earlier. After meeting interest, sinking fund and income-tax charges, the profit is reduced to a net sum of £2,470, the previous year's figure being £4,598. • As the credit balance at the beginning of the. year was £8,476, the total at the end of the year was £10,946, but deducting £1,091 for a contribution to capital outlay gives a Credit balance of £9,855 to be carried forward.

During the year the buses covered an aggregate mileage of 1,100,027 and carried 7,351,880 passengers. In the past year the total revenue amounted to £51,804 and working expenses to £39,999, these figures on a per bus-mile basis being 11.3d. and 8.72d. respectively.. The buses are operated on a route mileage of 25 and, at the end Of March last, the total capital expenditure on the system had reached £56,148, of which amount £8,530 has been written oil in respect of buses disposed of, leaving a net outlay of £47,618. The sum of 119,111 has been redeemed, leaving a net capital indebtedness of £28,507.

During the year under review the corporation bought six Leyland doubledeckers.

SATISFACTORY RESULTS AT READING.

READING'S transport undertaking, which includes trams and buses, last year worked at a net profit of £2,104, as compared with £1,737 a year earlier. The former figure is, however, reduced to £437 by certain special appropriations in connection with road works.

The gross receipts from all sources amounted to £130,846, which figure, showing an increase of 1457 over the result for the previous year, constitutes a 'record. The bns-traffic receipts totalled £69,003, an increase of £10,239, whilst sundry receipts amounted to £1,544. The traffic expenses on the combined tram and bus undertakings were 146,452, ehowing an increase of £265. General expenses amounted to £9,731, being £198 higher-than in the previous year.

On the other hand, the repairs and maintenance account showed a decrease

of £2,993, the actual cost being £22,810. The gross profit on the whole undertaking totalled £22,899, a decrease of /257.

The buses covered 1,303,808 miles, an increase of 230,808, whilst they carried 8,198,048 passengers, or .,329,157 more than in the previous year. Mr. Calder,. the transport manager, says that there is a. gradual, but steady, flow of traffic from the trams to the buses on routes where the two forms of transport are in operation.

'PROFIT ONCE AGAIN ON

DARLINGTON'S TROLLEY-BUSES. THE transport accounts of Darling ton Corporation show that, in the year ended March 81, 1933, the fleet of 32 trolley-buses run by the corporation were operated at a gross profit of £14,156, the net profit being £4,131. Total revenue was £52,492 and working expenses amounted to £38,336.

During the year the trolley-buses

covered an aggregate mileage of 1,142,386, and carried 10,004,169, passengers, the number of passengers per bus mile being 8.8 and the receipts per passenger 1.26d. The journeys per head of population served was 187.1. The vehicles operate on a route mileage of 11.02 and serve a population of 73,000.

Twenty-four of the trolley-buses are of Clough-Smith make, six are English Electrics, whilst two are Ransomes. £85,500 LOSS ON LIVERPOOL BUSES.

DURING the year ended March 31

last, Liverpool Corporation bus undertaking •worked at a net loss of £85,535. As a result, the reserve, renewals and depreciation fund has been reduced from £31,728 to £277. Last year the buses carried 33,792,479 passengers, as compared witll 39,030,618 for the previous year.

RICH HARVEST FROM ROCHDALE'S BUSES.

DURING the year ended March 21,

1933, Rochdale Corporation, which runs 114 buses (78 Crossley and 36 Dennis), 43 of them being oil-engined, made a gross profit of £46,359 on the operation of these vehicles. The total revenue amounted to £189,008 and working expenses to £142,649. Interest on capital, less bank interest, absorbed £4,840, sinking fund £4,122 and loans repaid £18,603.

During the year the vehiclescovered on aggregate mileage of 3,469,580 and carried 28,341,461 passengers. The average revenue per bus-mile was 12,995., and the average working expenses on the same basis 9.865.

It should be placed on record that the corporation finally abandoned its tram system, which commenced En 1902, on November 12, 1932. The first bus route was opened in March, 1926.
