by Juliet Parish • NFC's loss-making parcels carrier Lynx is re-entering the non-account parcels delivery market, as part of its drive to get back in the black within 12 months.
Its courier arm, Lynx Courier Services, withdrew from the battle to win one-off parcel deliveries four years ago to concentrate on securing long-term contracts. Less than 5% of the firm's courier traffic is currently ad hoc work.
Philip Rose, Lynx's managing director for the past 15 months, believes that a balance of contract and ad hoc business could double the courier division's £5m turnover in the next 12 months. But he says: "It is important that the business does not change completely overnight."
Initially the ad hoc service will concentrate on next-day deliveries. But when it is established, same-day deliveries will be added, says Rose. "It would be unrealistic of me to expect to have a meaningful presence in courier traffic if we did not offer a viable same-day product".
