• Hauliers could find themselves under pressure to provide pension schemes for their drivers if a campaign launched this week by the Transport and General Workers Union gains support.
The pensions campaign will be aimed at smaller hauliers not providing any form of retirement cover for their drivers.
TGWU executives are investigating how to set up a company-type pension scheme which would allow employers and drivers to contribute to a fund that could be switched between companies when drivers change jobs.
The decision to prepare a pension scheme for next year's pay round follows a meeting last week between the union's commercial road transport national secretary Danny Bryan and 50 shop stewards. They also decided to ask for a weekly minimum wage of £170 for 32 tonnes and will campaign against long working hours.
