• Neutratank, a system of sealing unused underground storage tanks by filling them with a hardening foam, is now available from TankSafe. Foam filling avoids the need for temporary filling with water or permanent filling with sand/cement, says TankSafe.
Two types of urea formaldehyde resin foam are available to fill drained tanks, RG8 and RG22. The numbers relate to the loading capability of the cured foam in tonnes/m2. RG8 is also readily removed and especially useful in tanks to be moved in the future.
Both types of foam will absorb up to 80% of their own volume in hydrocarbons and so preventing leaks if a filled tank eventually rusts through.
Cost is between 150 and L75/m3 for the finished job whichincludes labour.
