VESTERDAY Queen Elizabeth the I Queen Mother performed the opening ceremony at the Vacuum Oil Company's new refinery at Cory ton, Essex. Her Majesty also unveiled a commemorative bronze tablet at the cafeteria building.
The Queen Mother travelled to Coryton in the Port of London Authority's launch "St. Katharine." She was met at Tower Bridge Pier by Viscount Waverley, the chairman of the P.L.A., who was her host during the journey to the refinery.
Among those who travelled on the launch were Mr. Winthrop Aldrich, American Ambassador, Mr. J. C. Gridley, chairman of the Vacuum Oil Co., Ltd., Sir Herbert Merrett, chairman of Powell Duffryn, Ltd., and Mr. B. Brewster Jennings, president of Socony-Vacuum Oil Co., Inc.
On arrival, Her Majesty was received by the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Sir Francis Whitmore.
The refinery, which has taken 31 years to complete, processes 1m. tons of crude oil a year, the end products being two grades of motor sPiritMobilgas and Mobirgas Special—Mobil Diesel for oil engines, gas oil, fuel oils and a range of lubricating stock oils, greases arid waxes.
LEYLAND WINS DUTCH RALLY AGAIN
ALEYLAND vehicle last week won the Dutch Coach Rally for the third successive year. The winner was a Royal Tiger 46-seater with Verheul body belonging to Garage Zwart, Wormervecx. There were 48 vehicles of British, Dutch, American and German makes in the rally. The Royal Tiger was a 1951 model normally engaged on international tours.
A similar model took third place. It was a 32-seater operated by Amova Express, The Hague, a subsidiary of Dutch State Railways. This coach has a two-speed rear axle. Amova have placed a repeat order for two of these vehicles.
The rally included a 100-mile run with map-reading tests—a regularity test run with speedometers masked— and an acceleration and manceuvrability trial in Arnhem.
NO EVENING COACH PARTIES
TOprevent visits from "unwelcome parties who drink to excess," Troon, Ayrshire, now closes the municipal vehicle park at -5 p.m. This will prevent evening coach parties from travelling to the town, it is felt. Family parties and children are still welcome throughout the day, but "troublemakers had to be dealt with severely."
