L'XAMPLES of the 43 new 30 ft.
Routemaster coaches which are to replace RT-type buses on the Green Line routes from Aldgate to the Essex suburbs have now been delivered, and one of the first was demonstrated by London Transport on Monday.
Basically, the new coaches are a longer version of the RMC coaches already in service, and seat 65 passen-, gers compared with the former's 57, or nine more than the RT doubledeckers they are replacing. As on the RML bus, the extra length is provided by an additional intermediate bay of 2 ft. 4 in. length fitted in the centre of the body, the sub-frames carrying the running units requiring no modification. A larger, 11.3-litre engine is fitted, however, because of the
increased weight (just under 8 ions unladen).
Modifications compared with •the RMC coaches include revisions to the frontal design already applied to some of the RMC coaches, and the use of porcelain green as the secondary colour. Internally, grey vynide has been employed on the ceilings in way of the luggage racks, and sun yellow applied to the upper saloon ceiling in place of the ivory formerly used, ivory being retained in the lower saloon.
First route to be equipped with the new vehicles will be the 721 (Aldgate to Brentwood), on June 2, to be followed by 722 on June 16 and the 723 group on July 1. The displaced RT double-deckers will be used on bus services elsewhere.
