TE first outfit to carry the title of Hargreaves Transport Ltd. is this 28ton-gross artic of the Smith and Robinson tanker division of the new 450-vehicle organization established on April 1 by the Hargreaves Group.
The Butterfield 4.000-gal, tank is mounted on Crane Fruehauf running gear and the semi-trailer is hauled by an ERF. The outfit has under-shell heating coils.
This is one of many such outfits ranging from 28 to 30 tons dross now coming into the company's fleet, this one being based at Manchester where the depot in Essex Road, Urmston, has been growing fast. It now has 80 vehicles, and the Western Division director and general manager, Mr. H. H. Clarke, expects continued expansion to about 120 vehicles, 75 per cent artics.
The company has installed its own oilfired boiler, at a cost of £6,000, producing 3.000 lb. of steam an hour, all round the clock, for the six-vehicle steam-cleaning bay ; it also produces steam for coil-heating a further four vehicles. A part of the bay and the boiler house are seen below.
