BREAD DELIVERY van operators should continue to operate without tachographs for the time being, according to the Freight Transport Association.
The FTA has joined the Federation of Bakers in backing a petition seeking leave to appeal to the House of Lords against a recent High Court ruling that bread delivery vehicles need tachographs (CM, April 9).
Both associations have added their support to Thomas Scott and Sons (Bakers) Ltd and driver Brian Rimmer who have sought leave to appeal to the Law Lords.
The FTA estimates that the ruling could affect "tens of thousands" of vehicles, with a total bill of £4m at the very least.
It is assuring its members that if vehicles are used specifically for door-to-door selling, they should continue to be exempt from tachograph legislation, and any operator who has problems either with enforcement authorities or when presenting a vehicle for its annual test should contact FTA immediately.
A spokesman for the FTA said members should carry on as normal pending the Lords procedures. The petition is not likely to be considered before the end of next month.
