French truckers attempts to bring their country to a standstill appear to have failed as CM went to press, with blockades meting away under the threat of government action.
French ministers and police threatened to revoke drivers' licences if they blocked roads. This tactic seems to have worked as only one blockade remained at Clermont Ferrand on Tuesday morning 126 November).
French drivers initially mounted a number of "fitter blockades" (where cars were allow to pass through) and three full blockades. The main problem areas were Paris, Lille. Normandy and Calais: Le Havre was also targeted, But in general delays were minimal—Irish drivers reported cranes were used to keep vital routes open.
The blockades were organised by France's two largest road transport unions, CFO! and CGT. They are campaigning for an enhanced package of pay and conditions, including 13 months' pay for 12 months' work. They also want a shorter working week and a retirement age of 55.
• The Mont Blanc Tunnel will be closed overnight from 22:00hrs on 12 December until 07:00hrs on 13 December for a safety check.
