INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS face fines of up to €138 (f95) if they are caught without highvisibility clothing in their cabs when spot-checked by the police in Italy and Spain.
The move comes amid new legislation which states that a reflective jacket or waistcoat must be worn if leaving a broken-down vehicle on the carriageway at night or in poor visibility.
Drivers can even be fined for walking to an emergency phone without wearing the correct highvisibility clothing.
Nick Rowbottorn, managing director of clothing manufacturer Viz Reflectives says: "Many people do not know about the new laws, and with France and Germany to follow suit we want to raise awareness of this issue.
"Too few drivers carry high visibility clothing in case of a breakdown," he concludes.
