to south, and virtually all other roads being single carriageway, the problem of tailbacks behind vehicles running at 40mph is commonplace. With the increase in speed (safety?) cameras and the prospect of three points on a driver's licence for each offence of 46mph, drivers will adhere to the 40mph limit and frustrated car drivers who want to proceed at more than the 60mph limit will weave in and out of the traffic, and make gestures at the drivers who are driving perfectly correctly at the speed limit.
If HGVs are to be limited to 40mph there is little sense in allowing coaches to do 50mph with a full complement of passengers. This also applies on dual carriageways and motorways where coaches/buses can run at 60/70mph, compared with HGVs at 50/56mph.
Locally, our police force is targeting trucks exceeding 40mph on the county's A-roads, as 40% of accidents involve HGVs. However, they do not state what percentage of trucks were at fault in these incidents.
