THE LATEST STATISTICS from the Department for Transport show that last year foreign trucks were involved in more than a third of the injury accidents caused by vehicles changing lanes on the motorways.
Foreign or left-hand-drive trucks were involved in 443 out of 1.149 incidents: invariably when the vehicle was moving to the right.
Foreign trucks are notoriously prone to this type of accident largely because of the right-hand blindspot, Now Highways Agency officers in the East Midlands are issuing advice to motorists in the region following a spate of sideswipe incidents.
HA operations manager Matt Pates advises drivers to stay back and give trucks room to manoeuvre until there is enough space in front to get past safely.
