PRODUCTION of Guy trucks is to be stopped by the middle of next year, British Leyland Truck and Bus announced last week.
The move is the first product rationalisation move to be announced since the company's reorganisation following the Ryder Report. The Guy factory will continue in operation as a major supplier of parts and components to the rest of the group.
Casualty
Chief casualty of the decision will be the Guy Big J range of rigids and artic trac tor units. Apart from being in competition with several other Leyland models, the Big J would have shortly required major changes to comply with forthcoming legislation.
As it is, Leyland expects enough Big Js to be available to meet expected demand until the end of 1976.
With the Guy plant in Wolverhampton continuing in production, none of the 750 jobs there is expected to be lost, says British Leyland. It will continue to supply ckd kits for export, including bus chassis.
