THE BORDER Regional Council is to appoint a travelling mechanic-inspector to check the minibuses in use by contractors serving the Education Committee.
Following allegations that there had been serious defects on some of the 40 minibuses used by contractors to take children to schools, including defective steering, faulty brakes and lights, the Director of Education asked his committee for action.
It has now agreed to appoint a travelling mechanic who will ensure the standards of mechanical efficiency on the vehicles in use. He will be responsible for checking safety standards and avoidance of mechanical breakdowns. Cost of the checking service will be £6,000 a year.
