IF you've never had a windscreen go, you can't begin to appreciate the terror of the moment. I had one go recently: it went off like a rifle report and, suddenly, I was blind. There's nothing to do but brake and brake hard — provided, of course, it's safe to do so — knock out the glass and get to a replacement service.
That's where the trouble begins again. It seemed to me I had seen dozens of windscreen replacement depots offering 24-hour service but not when I needed it.
This week, when I don't need it, I learn that Autoglass Ltd has a network of 41 depots in operation from Aberdeen to Plymouth 24 hours a day. It claims to be able to fit 90 per cent of windscreens within two hours and ex stock.
And, if you happen to be insured through Sun Alliance, there's a 10 per cent discount and a promise of priority service. I hope you never need to put the service to the test, but it's good to know it's there.
