I READ with interest your article entitled"Work time: Don't surrender" (CA122 July) and enjoyed he idea that the FreightTransport Association and The Road Haulage Association may be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.
The term was coined after four Swedes held hostage in a bank in the capital of Sweden in 1973 began to empathise with the actions and aims of their captors.
Is this markedly different from messers King,Turner,Webb and Roderick held up in a boardroom talking to the government as part of the Transport forum? Maybe... but perhaps we under-estimate our transport chiefs. Stockholm Syndrome is now used as a useful tool in hostage survival. The idea goes that the more you bond the less likely it is that you will be killed. Hostages are encouraged tote!! their kidnappers about their kids and personal situations and make them sympathise with you.
In fact terrorists are now trained to put hoods on their captives to make them appear less human and prevent this.
Will the government feel sorry for us in the end and free us from the WorkingTime Directive, fuel duty wand Alistair Darling? M Sturgess via e-mail
