A NEW overhead-valve engine, based PAon the QX underfloor unit, has been introduced by Comrner Cars, Ltd., Luton, to replace the side-valve engine fitted to the Superpoise range. The new six-cylindered engine has a 31-in. bore and 4*-in, stroke, and develops
85 nett • at 200 lb.-ft. torque. This is an increase of 5 b.h.p. and 22 lb,-ft. torque above the power output of the former unit which had a smaller bore and longer stroke.
The overhead-valve engine has a seven-hearing. crankshaft, replacing the four-hearing shaft; and embodies four integrally forged balanced weights and overlapping diameters of main and 'crankpin bearings. To meet the increase Of power, a heavier type of universal joint is fitted in the transmission, whilst larger diameter axle drive shafts with
redesigned splines are standard. The cooling system incorporates a four-row tube stack with a high-efficiency fan, and a more effective air flow is assured by modified spacing between the radiator grille bars.
Alterations have also been made to the Superpoise braking system and the 2-3and 3-4-ton models retain the Girling hydraulically operated two-. leading-shoe system and 14-in. diameter drums, but the shoe widths have been increased by .1 in. at the front and 1 in. at the rear to provide a total friction facing area of 328 sq. in. This is approximately 40 per cent, greater than before. The front-axle brake drum diameter has been increased to 16 ins. on the 5-tonners and the rear drums and shoes have been modified, thereby increasing the frictional area to 408 sq. in.
