Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

M We decided to take a look at how Autotrans behaves in UK traffic conditions, so we went out in an Actros demonstrator belonging to Derby-based main dealer Mertrux. The 2540LS 6x2 mid-lift tractor was coupled to a triaxle trailer and laden to the full 41 tonnes.

Unlike some automated gearshift systems--Scania's Opticruise for one--there is no need to engage the clutch for pulling away or shunting. In fact the clutch pedal remains folded out of the way under normal circumstances.

There's really little to learn: the function buttons on the shift lever allow the driver to shift up or down if there is a hill approaching, but for most purposes, even roundabouts, there is no need. The system works seamlessly in conjunction with the truck's cruise control, and shifts down automatically when the engine brake is engaged.

Actual shifts are quick: not, perhaps, as lightning-fast as with Zrs AS-Tronic. but very smooth. We certainly see why Mercedes claims a 5% drop in maintenance and repair costs, arising from longer clutch life and gentler gearchanging.

And driving the truck was relatively relaxing: the saving in terms of driver fatigue might be at least as great
