• Unrest among Ease tanker drivers could lead to widespread disruption of petrol delivery services. Men in Scotland, the West Country and parts of the Midlands are refusing to work new 6,000gal. tankers (of which Esso recently introduced 1361 unless their load is limited to the 4,000gal. which applied before regulations were relaxed. Lightning strikes could follow.
The drivers want another £4 a week to handle the new vehicles and TGWU officials are meanwhile refusing to take part in talks about a productivity deal which would give two 25s-a-week rises. The first would be in return for 40 m.p.h. schedules and the second for further concessions. Esso claims TGWU is breaking the 1966 productivity agreement: the union denies that new vehicles were included in that deal.
