• The Chartered Institute of Transport is pressing the Government to introduce a road pricing system to ease congestion in London — with a charge of some 215 a day on every PSV in the London area.
In a report entitled Paying for Progress, prepared for Transport Secretary Cecil Parkinson, the Institute recommends a charge for all vehicles using the capital by the mid1990s. Predicted profits of some 2400 million a year would be invested back into the transport system.
C1T working party member Philip Goodwin says the road charges would not force a rise in bus fares, but the Bus and Coach Council says it has "no confidence that the cash raised would benefit the passengers".
