William Horton & Sons of Doncaster and one of the company's drivers to be paid out of public funds, after charges alleging the use of a vehicle with an insecure load were dropped. The company, and driver Brian Stone, had denied using a vehicle that had been travelling on the M1 motorway when its load of soft sand was not so secured as to prevent it being dangerous. The prosecution decided not to proceed with the matter as it was felt that the defendants had been charged with the wrong offence,
