A traffic policeman spotted Alan Holmes' letter (CM 22-28 February) suggesting the inside lane should be closed initially as a smoother way of channelling motorway traffic into two lanes for roadworks. The flow could then be diverted over to the middle and inside lanes if needed. This method has been used successfully in Singapore.
Now the idea has been passed on by the police for investigation by a Department of Transport working party into motorway safety.
