When I saw the headline 'Mini freight trains bid to cut congestion' (CM 8-14 March) and the photograph of a motorway I thought: at last—the powers that be have seen sense.
Unfortunately, though, these trains are to be of railway type which use flanged wheels on, or too often off, raised rails. I have referred to these in a recent letter to a rail magazine, which berated the Highways Agency for not having longer/stronger barriers, although the I25mph railway had nothing to prevent or detect an obstruction.
We, the Dutch, Germans, Swedes, Australians and others have the systems, including safety methods, We have the routes; we have the vehicles. So why do we in the UK not have the savvy to form trains on roads (not necessarily general highways) and make roadtrainsP CR Baldwin, Birmingham.
