Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Hayley Pink HAULIERS DELIVERING into London’s Crossrail sites need to be aware of the project’s tough cycle safety requirements, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) warns.

Crossrail requires all lorries delivering to any of its sites to be itted with extensive safety equipment, such as blindspot proximity sensors, side under-run guards and warning alerts for cyclists.

However, it appears that the exact requirements are not iltering through to subbies delivering to the site, which has led to some vehicles being barred from entry.

One West Midlands haulier, an occasional subbie on the project, tells CM that his truck was refused entry to a Crossrail site for not being itted with the required kit.

He argues that the checklist used to assess vehicles’ safety gear is more suited to construction-type vehicles. He also says no information has been passed to his company on the exact kit requirements and that no explanation is provided in the paperwork used to turn vehicles away.

FTA head of urban policy Gordon Telling says there is an issue with the information not being clearly communicated to occasional subcontractors. He warns that such requirements will become the norm in the near future, with Transport for London (TfL) also planning to introduce similar requirements across its sites.

“Considering that TfL and Crossrail are requiring this, we recommend you it this equipment in new vehicles,” he says.

Crossrail tells CM that it is the responsibility of the scheme’s principal building contractors to provide subbies with the information.
