The Italian-made Meck Lock System, available from NSM Distribution in Peterswood, Hants, isolates the ignition, handbrake and clutch so that the vehicle cannot be moved. It is proving popular in the recovery market where operators need to leave the engine running while hitching up the brokendown vehicle.
In ttaly insurance companies offer a 40% discount f the system is fitted and in this country Zurich offers a 10% discount if it is fitted to plant.
Sean Millar, marketing direc
tor at NSM, is currently talking to HGV insurance companies about discounts.
The Meck Lock takes two hours to install and costs £250 unfitted and £450 fitted.
Stoke on Trent haulier Barry Proctor Services has fitted four units and will fit another eight as it takes delivery of new vehicles later this year.
"It's a very good system because it stops anyone stealing your vehicle. We've had one theft of a tractor and if it had been fitted with a Meck Lock it wouldn't have happened. Hauliers tend to blame police for doing enough but we don't do enough to help ourselves," says managing director Barry Proctor.
