The recovery of a stolen trailer and improved customer service are two of the benefits Rugeley, Staffs-based hauler B and J Commercial Services has enjoyed since deploying Quartix's vehicle tracking system across its fleet. The operator has its own fleet of 26 vehicles, and works closely with a network of subcontractors. Tracking units are installed on tractor units and double and triple-deck trailers.
"Fifteen months ago we were working with a rudimentary phone tracking system;' says managing director Bill Hope. "Now the transport department can see at a glance the vehicles' real-time locations. We can make a considered decision as to whether any particular load will work, based on where the driver is and when he will be available. Essentially, the system gives us far more control helping us to squeeze jobs in and make decisions very quickly:' In addition, one of the firm's customers -which has 27 dedicated double-deck trailers-has been granted access to track delivery progress itself via the Web.
The trailer-tracking option foiled a recent attempted theft. "A tractor unit carrying a load for us was taken from a closed yard at 2am; we were alerted at 6am and immediately checked the
111 1111 lur rfirffri tracking system, which showed the vehicle parked in a nearby town. The police recovered the tractor unit minus the trailer. Fortunately, the tracking system's daily route chart revealed a point at which the vehicle's journey had been briefly interrupted; this location was checked out and the trailer was found dumped, presumably for later unloading. We were able to recover tractor, trailer and load all by noon on the same day."
