• The general purposes sub-committee of Cumberland county council considers that the use of minibuses and postal buses is not a practical solution to the rural bus problem, and believes that the appointment of a transport co-ordinating officer should not be made until after the proposed local government reorganization.
It is to recommend a four-point plan to the council to help rural transport: First, a basic network of services subsidized under the Transport Act 1968; private operators for areas not suitable for the major companies subsidized where necessary; informal car pool schemes, co-ordinated by parish councils and operated by local residents or voluntary organizations; and the use of school contract buses to carry other passengers as well.
