Their Majesties the King and Queen, who so graciously attended, arrived at 3.15 p.m., and after-inspecting the parade, reached the dais at 3.40 p.m_ Within a few minutes the blast of a whistle heralded the approach of tile leaders of the First Era-1896-1904—the said blast coming from the Grenville steam coach of 1875 vintage.
Undoubtedly, one of the surprises was the excellent going made by the veterans which passed with clock-like regularity. Gradually the speed increased until the 1946 private car models virtually glided by.
Then came, first, the light vans to herald the start of the commercial vehicle parade. Irrespective of size or
type these machines were exceptionally quiet running, and the manner in which the David Brown and Fordson Major tractors bounded by was something of an eyeopener.
The R.A.F., W.D., G.P.O. and the Metropolitan Police were all represented by special-purpose equipment, which made an excellent tailpiece to one of the finest spectacles which Londoners have had the opportunity of witnessing.
Full credit must go to everyone who took part in the organizing of this most successful function, and particularly to Mr. H. G. Starley, C.B.E., F.I.M.1., chairman of the Jubilee Committee, upon whose shoulders fell the bulk of the work.
