A LOGICAL development of the /A hydraulic lifting gear used in the Market Loader vehicles designed and built by Market 'Transport, 'Ltd., 166 Weir Road, Balham,.London, S.W.12, is a general-purpose gantry loader. A mock-up Of the proposed design' was shown at the new factory at Fleet last week, where, as reported in The commercial Motor, an exhibition was held of the specialized types of body produced by the company.
This new loader will be available for dealing with machinery and other goods up to a %%eight of two tons. The present loader is for meat and operates from the tail-end of the vehicle, the Carcasses, which are hung from roof rails, being impelled into the body by means of a pole.
In the new gantry loader, the U-shaped frame and hydraulic-cylinder Mechanism arc mounted,. so that the lifting gear, complete with its load, can be moved along the body on rails.. Although the gear was shown mounted on a Leyland six-wheeled 'platform lorry, the idea lends itself equally to use on vans.
Once the load has been brought within reach of the gear and hooked up, no manual effort is required other than to cOntrol the lifting and traversing of the gear. An outstanding advantage is that the load can be precisely located on the floor at any point between the headboard and tailboard. It is also excellent for dealing with pallets.
The gear can be adapted to existing vehicles. Traversing can be carried out either manually or by winch gear, but design details of this feature have not yet been fully evolved.
A commendable feature of the loader is that it takes up little space and would have no material effect on the payload capacity of the vehicle.
