Man I don't envy this week—or for many weeks to come: Wing Commander GrantFerris, MP, who is chairing the committee on the Transport Bill in the Commons. He is the Conservative member for Nantwich (good commercial vehicle territory, anyway, with Foden and ERF just down the road, and Atkinson, Leyland and Seddon not so very far away).
How do chairmen of Commons committees get chosen, you may ask. Even if you don't, I'll tell you. They are selected from the Speaker's panel, a body of Members regarded as almost clinically impartial.
The Wingco has been on the panel for over five years, but he now faces just about his biggest single stint. Commons committees usually sit twice a week. This one is going to meet three times a week—from now until well into the summer.
Just fancy spending all that time holding the ring between Babs and Peter—and their many supporters!
