SEVERAL SCOTTISH councils are to look into the possibility of starting schemes to provide free or subsidised bus travel for the unemployed.
However, Strathclyde Region has already vetoed the suggestion. Said deputy leader Charles Gray: "Much as we might want to provide this, it would be impossible for us to underwrite the cost at this time."
Meanwhile, Central Regional council has agreed to consider the idea at its budget meeting for next year. "The councillors. discussed the free travel scheme at length and decided to defer a decision until they find out how much money is left in the coffers," said a spokesman.
A Stirling unemployed workers' association has already met the council to discuss the possibility of free transport.
