Euro-6 emissions legislation to he delayed for two years, to reflect the current crisis in the European truck market. Euro-6 legislation is due to take effect from 2012 on new vehicle types, and from 2013 for all new registrations.
Monferino, speaking at the recent launch of the Iveco EcoDaily (pictured), said the cost and effort involved in introducing Euro-6 is not the most effective means of cutting emissions. He added: "We have had successive cuts in exhaust emissions over the past 15 years, halving the emissions every time. When you continue to do this, you quickly end up in a position where the benefit becomes marginal. We are now in that position, particularly in the current climate."
Monferino argues that a better way to reduce emissions would be to remove Euro-0 and Euro-1 trucks from the road: "There are tens of thousands of these trucks in operation," he said.
Other manufacturers are believed to share the same view as Iveco, and it is understood that the truck-makers' trade association ACEA is preparing a document calling on Brussels to delay the implementation. However, industry observers point out that the process of introducing the law is now too far down the line to stage a U-turn without completely redrafting the legislation.
