• In an effort to crack down on commercial vehicle theft, the Vehicle Inspectorate is to consider whether operators should be forced to bring their registration documents to each annual test.
The issue has been thrown up by a recent Department of Transport review on the light commercial and car test which has concluded drivers will have to produce their registration documents at each annual test.
Any review of the annual test would take into account the problems that fleet operators would have in taking individual registration documents to the VI's 91 commercial vehicle test sites.
Truck theft costs operators an estimated £1bn a year. But the Freight Transport Association says any such move would outweigh the benefit of the anti-theft measure.
