POINTING out that railway fare! were fixed by an independent tri. burial, Mr. J. L. R. Croft submitted al the hearing of an appeal at Newcastle upon Tyne that a Licensing Authorit} was not permitted to take into accoutu the difference between road and rai fares except in specific cases directed 133 the Minister of Transport.
The hearing was of an objection 1,1 the Railway Executive against the gran of a licence by the Northern Licensim Authority to Messrs. Hall Bros., of Soutl Shields, permitting them to extend thei services from Tyneside to the Midlands The appeal concerned a winter day ser vice between South Shields and Bed worth, and a night service between Soutl Shields and Coventry during summe and at Christmas and New Year.
Whilst admitting that there was nee, for services, Mr. Croft, for the appel !ants, contended that existing facilitie were adequate. The number of peopl travelling on the route had fallen i recent years and, if anything, service should be curtailed.
Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, for th respondents, said there was a tremer dons body of opinion in favour c Messrs. Hall Bros. More than 50 people had offered to give evidence i their favour, and the need for the se] vice had been proved to the comple1 satisfaction of the Authority.
