IMPROVEMENTS in the level of street lighting are foreshadowed when the Local Government Bill becomes law, probably some time after Christmas.
An explanation of how the Bill will modernize street lighting administration and the improvements this will bring will be given by the Electricity Council on its exhibit at the Association of Public Lighting Engineers' Exhibition (Blackpool, October 4-7).
Responsibility for road lighting will be transferred from 2,000 local lighting authorities to about 300 highway authorities. The Bill will allow for a 75 per cent capital grant to be made for lighting On principal roads, and it will be easier for authorities to provide lighting where it is needed in the interests of road safety.
