A SMALL Derbyshire coach operator, John Cowlishaw, trading as J. Tours, of Alfreton, has been given authority to operate a 13-day tour to Vienna on two occasions each season, in a reserved decision announced by the East Midland Traffic Commissioners.
Cowlishaw had applied for a much wider licence, authorising the operation of many Continental tours. The application was opposed by National Travel and Trent Motor Traction Co Ltd (CM, April 23).
At the public sitting, it was said that Mr Cowlishaw had been operating private parties to the Continent for a number of years. There were often parties who had insufficient numbers to justify the hire of a coach and the public disliked having to make use of "feeder" services to join National's tours at central points.
National argued that it offered a programme of tours direct from Alfreton. It was only able to offer a wide programme to the public because it was able to draw traffic from a wide catchment area.
In their decision, the Commissioners say they felt there was a case for a strictly limited locally based facility for Continental holidays. It could be reasonably expected to stimulate public demand for this type of holiday in the area, which would compensate for any small abstraction of traffic.
