• A steering wheel held on to the steering column by tape, and defective brakes have cost KID Commercials (Transport), of Ashton under Lyne, and one of its drivers £550 in fines and costs.
The company and driver Paul Travis each pleaded guilty to using a vehicle with defective steering, and the company also pleaded guilty to using it with defective brakes. KID Commercials was fined £350, Travis £150, and they were each ordered to pay £25 towards prosecution costs.
Senior traffic examiner Ho ward Mountain told Huddersfield magistrates that when the laden 38-tonne artic was examined during a weight check at the Ainley Top weighbridge, it could only be steered by holding the spokes of the steering wheel in the middle.
