• British hauliers stand to get a meagre share of EC cabotage permits under proposals put forward by the European Parliament's transport committee in Brussels last week.
The Euro MPs plan to give British hauliers just 2,214 of the 30,000 six-month permits. This compares with 2,604 for Belgium; 2,526 for Denmark; 4,146 for Germany; 1,146 for Greece; 2,700 for Spain; 3,534 for France; 1,170 for Ireland; 3,534 for Italy; 1,212 for Luxembourg; 3,684 for Holland and 1,530 for Portugal.
It is planned to increase the quotas by 50% each year from 1 January 1994 until the scheme goes into full operation in 1999.
The whole idea is in contrast to the EC Commission's scheme for a free-for-all next year; it is believed to be in response to pressure from hauliers in Spain, Italy, France and Germany who are afraid of outside competitors encroaching on their domestic markets.
