DECAUSE they thought that the estab lishment of Thistle Transport, Ltd„ on a farm in their village would restrict the free use of the green, Scotby people last week made strong representations when the company appealed at an inquiry against the refusal of planning permission for the use of a farmhouse and buildings.
The company are at present quartered at Carleton, near Carlisle. Scotby Green Farm, to which the company wish to move, was stated to have been bought by them in February. Mr. M. Carter, for the appellants, refuted suggestions that the village green would be cluttered with lorries.
The farmyard could take 40 vehicles whereas the company had only 14. All the vehicles were employed for a local plaster and cement works, Thistle Transport, Ltd., had been asked to leave their Carleton premises.
Mr. J. B. Griggs, for Cumberland County Council, said that the planning authority considered that the company's proposal would mean the introduction of industry in the quiet precincts of the village. The proper course would be to establish a transport depot at the plaster and cement works.
Mr. C. Hilton, Ministry of Housing and Local Government inspector, is to report to the Minister.
