I-1 A BIG increase in the production of
commercial vehicles by DaimlerBenz A.G. is reported by Dr. Konecke, chairman and managing director, in his statement for last year.
Output of the Mannheim plant rose by nearly 40 per cent. as compared with that of 1955. Altogether 26,287 lorries and buses were manufactured there during 1956. The largest share of the output was taken by the 44--ton model, of which 20,695 were built. More than 58 per cent. of the Mannheim factory's output was sold in the home market.
At Gaggenau, 11,051 goods vehicles, buses and ,special tractors were built. Sales in the home market (excluding special tractors) accounted for 29.4 per cent, of production.
Dealing with overseas activities, Dr. Konecke says that the Mercedes-Benz plant in Brazil is at present confined largely to the manufacture of the 0.M.312 engine, but the project to build 44-ton lorries in Brazil has been approved by the Government and import licences necessary to carry out the scheme have been granted.
Mercedes-Benz 44-ton lorries are now being made in India at the Jamshedpur plant of Tata Locomotive and Engineering Co., Ltd. Manufacture there began last October and up to 25 per cent. of the components were n1ade locally. During 1956. 6.000 44-ton lorries and 460 others built at Gaggenau were delivered to India by DaimlerBenz.
The German company granted Studebaker-Packard the sole rights of selling their commercial vehicles in North America.
