IT IS an appalling commentary on so-called civilisation that personal protection should justify a four-day international conference in Geneva, Topics to be discussed in the autumn include terrorism in Germany, kidnapping in Italy, "hostage and barricade situations" in the USA, the ordeal of a hostage, "crisis management and kidnapping negotiations' and "the psychology of hostage and siege situations".
The way life is developing, an expert knowledge of any of these subjects may become important to any of us at any time. Survival at a football match or on a London underground train on a Friday night might make other useful topics.
The only transport interest at the conference seems to be a talk on security in the car, which is likely to be concerned more with bangs than with clunks and clicks.
