• James Amos, former chairman of the Scottish Bus Group, died on Friday, aged 74. After service in World War I he returned to his native Yarrow and, with two brothers, began bus operations.
Later, as managing director of Brooks and Amos, he operated services throughout the Border country until the firm was merged with SMT in 1926. Starting as traffic manager, he worked his way to the top and succeeded the late Sir William Thompson as chairman of the Group in 1949. He retired in October 1963 and took up farming in Peeblesshire. Mr. Amos was a former president of the Institute of Transport.
