BUS and rail workers need to be told where they stood in the transport policy review, Mr Leslie Huckfield (Labour, Nuneaton) told the Commons.
For unless the National Bus Company received increased, financial support it would have to withdraw about 40 million route miles over the next year —and that could mean 10,000 drivers and staff losing their jobs.
Mr Huckfield was also critical of the 1968 Act, which, he said, instead of integrating had created even more competition.
He was not in favour of direction of traffic—neither he nor the Tramport and General Workers' Union favoured quantity licensing, which was a bureaucratic nonsense.
The best means of allocation between road and rail for both passengers and freight was a cost system based on the economic, social and environmental costs.
