When enforcement agencies check weigh your vehicles they should do so according to the proper codes of practice for enforcement weighing. It is extremely important that operators know what the rules are relating to enforcement weighing, whether on a dynamic axle weigher or a plate bridge.
If an enforcement officer does not adhere to the proper weighing procedure as laid down in the code of practice an incorrect result should be challenged. The Department
of Transport is currently updating its Codes of Practice in consultation with the Vehicle Inspectorate and Trading Standards although no firm date on publication has been given by the DOT.
However, hauliers wanting copies of the existing codes, which are now out of print, can still get a photostat copy from Alistair Mitchell, Vehicle Inspectorate, Grayfield House, Bankhead Avenue, Edinburgh EH1 1 4YX. There is no charge but operators must send a stamped, addressed A4 envelope.
