• The first new-series DAF truck to be delivered in the UK, as part of the company's declared intention to move into the heavy truck market here, was supplied last week to Charfield Commercial (Sales) Ltd, Chipping Sodbury. An FT 2000 tractive unit, it has the 156 bhp (DIN) DAF engine and is suitable for operation at 26 tons gcw.
Initially, all imports will be tractive units in the 24/36-ton category, but in the near • future rigids will be offered in a wide range.
So far five trudk dealers have been appointed but before long a total of 12 will serve all parts of the UK.
DAF has recently moved to much larger premises, at Lancaster Road, High Wycombe, and all commercials will be delivered to dealers from there after a thorough pre-delivery check. Plans are for a gradual build-up rather than a coup; some 50 tractive units will be delivered this year, starting in September, and reaching 250 in 1972.
All trucks are built in Holland and imported complete, and therefore incur a 22 per cent tariff. The trucks are factory-built in right-hand drive and are delivered painted in factory colours; they can be delivered in primer, but at only a nominal reduction in price.
